DEFINING STORIES, ROUND 10 – Bulega ends Razgatlioglu’s winning run with last-corner pass at Aragon
Razgatlioglu was on 12 wins in a row heading into Spain but faced fierce competition from Bulega at a circuit ‘El Turco’ had never won at
A few weeks on from the French Round in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship and all eyes were on MotorLand Aragon. Immovable object vs unstoppable force. Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) had won 12 races in a row leading into Aragon, while Ducati had won the last eight races at the Spanish circuit. Something had to give…
A RACE 1 FIGHT FOR THE AGES: Who came out on top?
With at least one streak destined to end in Race 1, it turned into a battle between Razgatlioglu and Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) at the head of the field. They switched positions numerous times throughout the 18-lap race as they squabbled over the win. In the end, it was the #1 who came home in P1 to make it a record-equalling 13 consecutive wins, and Ducati’s Aragon streak came to a stuttering halt.
A FIGHT TO THE LINE: A Superpole Race that went down in history
There were no illusions that Razgatlioglu still had it all to do to make it a record-breaking 14th win in a row, with the 10-lap Tissot Superpole Race going down to the wire. ‘El Turco’ led heading into the final corner but ‘Bulegas’ was able to take a tighter line, giving him the advantage through the long left-hander and on the run to the line. Bulega had ended Razgatlioglu’s winning streak at 13, but more importantly, had managed to take points out of Razgatlioglu's title lead for the first time since Race 2 at Most. He’d go on to win Race 2 as well, perhaps picking up some crucial momentum at the business end of the season.
